Lily paced in the hall waiting for her sister. Unlike the last time, she couldn’t be still long enough to hear what they were saying. Besides, the deep baritone of male voices could be heard through the door, but Daisy’s could not. Missing half the conversation made it much more difficult to eavesdrop.

Not that hearing the conversation mattered. Daisy would tell her what had happened anyway.

Lily had forced her sister to bring in the medicine. She’d also convinced her to feign interest in the man, though she wasn’t sure how much of it was fake. But she needed to know. If Daisy acted interested, would Ewan continue to pursue a match with Daisy? Had he been lying this afternoon? Was he actually interested in whichever sister would take him?

Her gut niggled with guilt. It wasn’t the most wholesome way to collect information, sending her sister in as a spy. And she risked Daisy really being a shameless flirt, but she’d decided the benefits outweighed the risks. Or they’d seemed to when she was planning all this. Now she wasn’t so certain.

The longer she waited out here, the more this farce seemed like trickery and lies.

Suddenly, Daisy came barreling out of the room, her face a decided shade of pale. “Daisy?”

“Oh Lily,” Daisy moaned. “I tried to do what you asked, but I made a terrible fool of myself.”

Lily grabbed her sister’s upper arms. “What do you mean?”

Daisy wring her hands together. “He wasn’t responding to me at all and so, I thought…”

“You thought what?” She squeezed a bit tighter.

“I thought if I kissed him—”

Lily gasped, giving her sister a bit of a shake. Her stomach had officially twisted into a thousand knots. “You kissed him?”

“I tried,” Daisy wailed. “It was awful.”

Somehow, that made her relax. Her hands loosened on her sister’s arms. “It was awful?”

“It was awful.” Only that didn’t make her feel a bit better. Because that voice was deep and gravelly and, if she were honest, angry. “And I’d like to know what is going on?”

She dropped Daisy’s shoulders. “What is going on?” Then she peeked over Daisy’s shoulder. Ewan had had a bath, and he looked…well that was to say…he looked divine. Tall, straight, strong, no man should look that good as sick as he’d been. “You bathed.”

His arms crossed over his chest. “Daisy, would ye excuse yer sister and me so that we might have a talk?”

“Certainly,” Daisy croaked and then she sprinted around Lily.

Lily gave a gasp of frustration or perhaps annoyance or maybe desperation. “Daisy, come back here.”

“Sorry,” Daisy called. “I tried.”

And then she was gone. Lily turned back to see Ewan McDonald’s blazing eyes, anger sparking in the irises. Her insides churned with guilt and dread. Drat. This wasn’t going to go well.
